We all look best when we stick to hair colors which flatter our natural skin tones. However, some people don’t know what their skin tone is and how to complement it with hair dye. To help you get the inside scoop on which hair color is best for your skin tone, we’ve created a comprehensive guideline.
First, let’s help you to determine what your skin tone is. If you’re female, you may already know, from buying foundation makeup and other cosmetics! A lot of cosmetic companies classify their products based on warm, cool and neutral tones – MAC and Cover Girl are just two examples.
However, it’s always good to have the facts, so that you don’t make mistakes when it comes to choosing a warm, neutral or cool hair color. This is why knowing what hair color is best for my skin tone is so vital!
The best way to know your skin tone is to look at the inside of your wrist. Do the veins found there appear to be blue or green? If your veins are blue, you likely have a cool skin tone. Your skin may be light, medium or dark in tone, but it will be most flattered by cool clothing colors, such as pure white, navy blue and hot pink.
If you have green veins inside of the wrist, you’ll be warm in skin tone and this means that you probably look great in tobacco brown, golden yellow and burnt orange. Again, your skin may be light, medium or dark – it’s about its underlying tone. Pale people can be warm, darker people can be cool, etc. Everyone is different!
If your vein color seems somewhere in the middle, you may be neutral. People with neutral skin tones are a balance of cool and warm and they look great in certain colors. One clue that you’re neutral is that you look wonderful in neutral shades, from basic beige to khaki to olive green to stone…
Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s talk about how to shop for hair color which really flatters!
How to find the right hair color?
Many Hollywood stylists know that understanding the skin tones of their clients is the key to making them look great. By dressing their clients in the right colors and then using the right makeup or grooming products on them, they can make their celebrity clients glow.
Discovering what hair color is best for my skin tone will give you the power to look like a superstar! And it is also one of the most painless way to look decades younger.
The correct colors for your skin tone will make you look younger and more radiant, whereas the wrong colors will make you look tired, older than you are and maybe even a bit blotchy and ill.
The same principles apply with hair color. You’ll need to choose the right shade in order to look your best. So, now that you know your skin tone, you’ll be ready to find a hair color which suits your skin’s undertones.
What to look for?
The secret of determining what hair color is best for my skin tone is knowing what my skin undertones are. Now that you know whether or not you’re cool or warm, you’ll be ready to find a hair color which has the same undertone. A lot of hair color lines (in fact, almost all of them) makes things easier for their customers by offering hair color which is labelled, Cool, Neutral or Warm.
However, you will need to consider more than this. Most experts believe that men and women look best in shades which are one to two shades lighter or darker than their natural color. So, in addition to finding a shade of hair dye which matches your undertones (cool, neutral or warm), you’ll need to consider just how dramatic of a color shift you’re going for. For example, if you want to cover gray, but stay close to your natural color, take an old photograph (from your pre-gray days) along with you when you shop. Then, find a shade of hair color which is a perfect match.
Sometimes, as we get older, going a little lighter is a good thing. It helps to soften the look of fine lines and generally makes it a bit easier to look youthful. For this reason, a lot of men and women go lighter when they get older. You will be able to cover gray hair with most of the lighter shades, whether they are cool, neutral or warm! However, you should always check the hair color box before you buy, in order to see for sure whether or not it offers one hundred percent gray coverage.
Do you want a big change?
Some people want drastic change. If you do want this sort of change, feel free to go a lot darker or lighter. It’s about self-expression in the end – if you want to have a certain hair color, you should go for it. Just remember to make sure that it is a match for your skin tone.
Even “crazy” hair dyes, such as purples, blues and oranges can flatter, as long as they match skin tones. Purple’s better for cool, pink or blue will work for neutral and orange will work for warm. This principle is great to know and it’s really useful when shopping for hair color, makeup and clothes.
Even jewelry may be chosen according to skin tone. Silver will be great for cool skin tones, rose-gold is great for neutral skin and yellow gold really flatters warm skin tones.
