More often than not, we consider dry brittle hair to be a type of hair when in fact it is a condition you can solve. The trick is finding the right way to solve your dry hair. Every person has a unique physiology and will respond to treatments differently. One of the most important ways you can fix your dry hair problems once and for all is by experimenting with different products that have been known to work. Tested by others, the following list of products and techniques are designed to point you in the right direction and make your brittle dry hair a thing of the past.
Why is my hair brittle?
Good question. There are a few common causes of extremely dry hair. The first is the weather. Increased exposure to the sun can leave your hair dry. Pool water can also cause your hair to become overly dry and brittle. Winter with its cold dry temperatures can also cause damage. Products with alcohol can also cause your hair to lose it’s natural strength. Many times, changes in hormones, like birth control or pregnancy, can also cause dry brittle hair. As a final consideration, know that hair is particularly susceptible to becoming brittle when wet. If you can, hold off on brushing until after you hair has at least partially dried.
1. Consider coconut milk
Coconut milk is a popular staple for everything from arthritis to dry skin. The truth is that the liquid harvested from the coconut flesh does provide some incredible benefits. For example, a quarter cup of coconut milk has 138 calories, 1.5 grams of protein, 2 grams of sugar, 14 grams of fat, .55 mg of manganese, .15 mg of copper, 60 mg of phosphorus, 22 mg of Magnesium, 3.9 mg of iron, and 157 mg of potassium.
Coconut milk is fantastic as an additive to your conditioner. It helps to make your hair fuller and smoother while not adding that oily feel that many conditioners leave. It can be used to treat your scalp and roots, helping to nourish your hair at its base. It can also be used to help promote hair growth, and in some cases even help to lessen the effects of balding. You can get coconut products in most stores. You can also buy a coconut, harvest the flesh yourself, blend, strain, and use fresh.
2. Consider butter
If coconut oil doesn’t work, then you may want to consider a stronger alternative. In particular, if you treat your hair with butter, you may be able to fix your dry brittle hair problem. The oils and fats in butter help to both add to the shine and thickness of your hair. It keeps your hair smooth, and reduces the risk of breaking points from happening.
A butter treatment is one of the easiest treatments to do. All you will require is unsalted butter and a shower cap. Melt a tablespoon of unsalted butter. When warm, apply to your hair, running it through from root to end. Once you have rubbed it in, put on the shower cap and leave it for 30 minutes. When the time is up, apply shampoo and then rinse out both. Do this every time you are going to take a shower and you should start seeing results within a week.
3. Consider olive oil
Butter not working for you but not yet done with kitchen solutions? In that case, you may want to consider olive oil hair treatment. Like butter, olive oil has many fats that can help to treat, protect, and improve the overall health of your hair. You will want to apply olive oil to your scalp as well as the hair itself.
Begin by taking half a cup of olive oil and warming it. You will want to make sure it is warm, and not hot as hot olive oil can damage the scalp. Once warmed, rub the olive oil into your scalp. After the olive oil has been rubbed into your scalp, brush it outward with your fingers along the strands. Wrap up your hair in either a plastic shower cap or a plastic bag and let sit for 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, shampoo your hair and then rinse everything out together.
